In 1988 George H.W. Bush was being re-elected, people were rocking out to Michael Jackson, full denim outfits were all the rage, and Seth Nash and his brother Mitch began selling the FlatCat. The FlatCat was a two-dimensional cardboard cat the brothers marketed as the “Perfect Pet,” but it was also the beginning of something greater. Now, 28 years later that silly piece of cardboard has evolved into Blue Q, a popular, wild and wacky, environmentally-friendly design and manufacturing company based here in Pittsfield.
Blue Q’s products are a lot like Seth himself, quirky and loud, but ultimately charming. The company slogan is “We just want you to be happy,” and this is the vibe you’ll immediately get when around Seth. He does want you to be happy. He treats strangers like friends and his staff like family. His humor is infectious and he is full of passion.
Seth is a huge proponent of the creative economy. He is on the board of IS183 Art School of the Berkshires, he was a judge at 1Berkshire’s recent creative economy pitch competition, and he owns real estate that is home to a growing number of local creative enterprises. In his own words, he loves the Berkshires because “the ratio of good weirdos to norms is optimal.”
Seth is also a husband and father of two. He likes to ski and mountain bike. He also enjoys creating things with his “limited woodworking and even more limited welding skills.” If there was anything you could say about Seth, it’s that he is an interesting and eclectic human.
Seth has always been a friend of those in the creative economy and 1Berkshire would like to recognize him for all of his hard work and dedication to our region.
