Berkshire train service would target downstate millennials

ALBANY — Plans for a seasonal weekend train service to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts are progressing, with a pilot program seeking to launch by Memorial Day 2020.

Under current plans, Massachusetts would pay Amtrak to extend one of its Empire Corridor trains, now terminating at Rensselaer, to Pittsfield, Mass. From there, passengers would rely on one of a number of options to cover the “last mile” to their destination, ranging from car-hailing services and rental cars to taxis and local buses.
