One year after BerkShares were finally accepted throughout the entire county, the nonprofit that sponsors the local currency is starting a new program for young people to help spread the word. BerkShares Inc. has received a $2,500 grant from the New Hampshire-based New England Grassroots Environment Fund to establish a new initiative, the BerkShare Ambassadors. The 10-month program, open to those between the ages of 16 and 30, is intended to engage younger Berkshire County residents in a local economy learning experience to generate personal and community connections, and train them to act as spokespeople or ambassadors for the local currency around the county.
