Living in the Berkshires, we’re surrounded by scenic vistas and inviting trails at every turn. For many of us, it’s a key reason we choose to call this region home. Next time you have the urge to get outside and make the most of our natural environment, take a closer look at the full range of options in Lanesborough.
If you’re rounding up the family or a group of friends, keep in mind the kid-friendly and accessible Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. It’s a favorite spot for many, but not so crowded as to be difficult for your group to stick together and enjoy each other’s company. Bikes are welcome of course, and you’ll also see strollers, recumbent bikes, roller blades and plenty of people on foot. Get the lay of the land – maybe you’ll want to challenge yourself with next year’s Steel Rail Half Marathon.
When you’re ready for group bonding at a whole new level, check out Ramblewild’s aerial obstacle courses. Keep in mind that this venue offers hiking and snowshoeing trails as well, so if you’d rather keep your feet on the ground while others explore the treetop “trails”, you’ll have that option too! Ramblewild also offers a 25% discount for Berkshire County residents. Bring your ID, some restrictions may apply.
Balance Rock State Park contains a selfie-worthy curiosity sure to please your out-of-town visitors (and you, if you’ve never been there!) The 30’ x 15’ limestone boulder makes for quite a backdrop when you “check in” on social media. Just avoid the temptation to leave your mark with anything other than footprints.
Next time you head to the Mount Greylock State Reservation, be sure to stop in at the Visitor Center located in Lanesborough. You’ll walk away with knowledge of the flora and fauna protected in the park, and a better appreciation for the work done in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp to set the stage for what we enjoy here today.
Lastly, Pontoosuc Lake isn’t just for seasonal residents – avail yourself of the year-round enjoyment this beautiful body of water offers. Take a dip or cruise around with a boat rental for the day, and tap into what has long been an ice-fishing destination, famous for its healthy supply of tiger muskies.
Make a resolution to make the most of living here, #intheberkshires, and start with taking a fresh look at Lanesborough! #liveBRK
