“A recent explosion at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions oil refinery, the biggest facility of its kind on the East Coast, has triggered concern that gas prices are set to rise in the Berkshires and across the Northeast.
Gas prices in the Berkshires sit at an average of $2.62 for a gallon of regular unleaded— 9 cents below the state average of $2.71, and 2 cents higher than the state price, according to AAA Northeast. Mark Schieldrop, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast, said that while it’s possible that prices might rise because of the explosion, so far, the evidence has not borne that out.
“We haven’t really seen a major bump short term,” he said. ‘It’s tough to predict. The explosion may cause prices to tick upwards, but the short-term impact doesn’t seem to be coming to fruition.'”
