In July of 1902 “Resort Topics” reported that “hundreds” were making a pilgrimage to the spot where Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote “The House of Seven Gables” and “A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls.” The writer bemoaned the fact that the trees grew in 50 years and obscured the exact view Hawthorne enjoyed as he wrote.
