Tanglewood is Our “Putting the Berkshires on the Map” Honoree

We are happy to announce that Tanglewood and the BSO have been selected to receive the 2016 Putting the Berkshires on the Map award in recognition of the substantial contribution it makes to the economy of the Berkshires. This recognition will be presented at the sixth annual Celebrate the Berkshires event on September 15, 2016, at Tanglewood in Lenox.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra engages more people than any other symphonic organization in the world through its operations of the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops, Tanglewood, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and Symphony Hall—bringing music into the lives of millions of people every year. Hailed as America’s premier summer music festival, Tanglewood has been the summer home of the BSO since its creation in 1937 providing high-quality musical performances amidst the pastoral beauty of the Berkshires. The 2015 Tanglewood season drew more than 315,000 visitors from around the world. The Tanglewood Music Center, which celebrated its historic 75th anniversary in summer 2015, continued to offer a wide array of spectacular performances DARTS (Days in the Arts at Tanglewood) immersed urban, suburban, and rural 6th–8th graders in a variety of activities designed to create a lifelong appreciation of music and the arts, while special promotions and ticket programs made Tanglewood more accessible to all.

Jonathan Butler, President of 1Berkshire said “… the legacy of Tanglewood has been a part of my life as a native of the Berkshires and I am proud to have our organization recognize the important role they have played throughout our history in creating a vibrant cultural economy each summer. They were the beginning of what has become a strong tourism economy in the region and an important part of who we are.”

“The BSO is pleased to receive this honor from 1Berkshire,” stated Kim Noltemy, Chief Operating and Communications Officer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. “Our connection to the Berkshires is so strong and each season we strive to provide a wide range of music that showcases the artistic excellence that makes Tanglewood unique. We also work to collaborate with many other businesses throughout the Berkshires for our mutual success. We look forward to hosting this year’s Celebrate the Berkshires gala on our campus at the end of this year’s season.”

In addition to honoring Tanglewood, 1Berkshire’s Celebrate the Berkshires will also showcase Berkshire-based individuals and businesses who demonstrate excellence in several “Trendsetter Award” categories. The entire community is invited to come celebrate these achievements and commitments that have strengthened the local economy and helped the region grow.
